SHROUD
1800 Granville Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Ink on fabric, 45’ x 40’ | April 2012

Shroud is a large-scale, site-specific print recording the historic facade of the 185 year old Macara-Barnstead building. This print records the textural surface of the buildings facade through the use of frottage- a direct rubbing technique akin to taking a rubbing from a coin. This process uses the buildings facade as a found printmaking matrices which is then printed slowly, by hand onto fabric using ink and a brayer.

Shortly after this public printing, the interior of the building was demolished to make room for the expansion of building behind it. The facade was dismantled and in part salvaged.
