ARCHITECTURE AS A LOOM
Image transfer, ink, mylar, and thread on Somerset Velvet, 22” x 30”, 2023-ongoing

Architecture as a Loom is an ongoing series of mixed-media drawings imagining various architectural sites as akin to a weaver's loom. This work draws inspiration from various steps in the weaving processes envisioning these as in-progress, performative gestures for large-scale public installations. This work highlights the importance and ubiquitous nature of cloth and weaving which often plays a surprising part in our relationship with architecture.

This series draws influence from the preparatory drawings used by land artists like Christo to imagine colourful woven installations. This series is less site-specific and draws upon the artist’s travels during residencies to St. John’s, Newfoundland, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Eastport, Maine and beyond.

The work explores the paper as a site where the imagined can exist. These drawings may be considered initial working plans for large-scale installations yet to be executed or as finished works intended as drawings themselves.
